ABOUT THE COMPETITION

We are very pleased to announce the 2025 Chopin Piano Competition will be held at 250 Old Maxwell Road in Latham on Saturday, September 20, 2025 starting at 9 AM. All prize winners will perform for the community in the Winner's Concert on Sunday, September 21.

All contestants perform a Chopin composition of their choice. Apprentice and Master level students select a second composition from the approved repertoire.  


Artist Pianos is pleased to provide a Steinway grand piano for the Competition and Winner's Concert.

COMPETITION RULES


​WINNERS RECEIVE CASH PRIZES
  • $250 Chopin Novice, Runner-up $100, Waltz Award* $50
  • $500 Chopin Apprentice, Runner-up $250, Mazurka Award* $200
  • $1,000 Chopin Master, Runner-up $500, Etude Award* $350  
* Waltz, Mazurka, and Etude awards are awarded at the discretion of the judges. ​

QUALIFICATIONS
  • The competition is open to piano students between the ages 6 - 19 who live and attend school within a 50 mile radius of the Capital District during the academic year. CDCYM maintains discretion for geographic qualifications.​
  • NOVICE: Typically, participants in this category are between 6-12 years old. Participants may choose any Chopin composition.​
  • APPRENTICE: Typically, participants in this category are between 12-16 years old. Participants must play two compositions: 1) one Chopin Mazurka and, 2) any Chopin composition of choice.
  • MASTER: Participants must be at least 13 years old by the day of the Competition; however, the age requirement for Master category can be waived if the student has won first place in the Apprentice Level. Participants must play two compositions:  1) one Chopin Etude from either Op. 10 or Op. 25 and, 2) any Chopin composition of choice.​

REGISTRATION
  • Previous 1st Place Winners of the Chopin Competition are ineligible to compete in the same level. 
  • Use the button at the top of this page to fill out the registration form.
  • A $45 registration fee is payable through the secure site by credit/debit card or PayPal.
  • Participants will receive a confirmation email that summarizes their selections.
  • Participant registrations at each level are limited – Novice: 12; Apprentice: 10; Master: 10.
  • Applicants may choose to be on a waiting list if a level is full.
  • ​We will contact you promptly to confirm receipt of your registration form.
  • Email one PDF copy of each composition you have chosen to play to [email protected].
  • In early September, we will notify you of the time of your performance and other logistics.
  • All award winners agree to perform in the Winners Concert on September 21.
